Sober living is often thought of as an optional step to take after someone completes drug or alcohol treatment. We’re here to change that narrative at RAD Living Recovery Residences and want to let you know sober living is a crucial component of recovery. Completing inpatient and/or outpatient treatment will help get you sober but isn’t essential when striving to maintain sobriety. RAD Living is a men’s only sober living residence located in Sherman Oaks, California. We hold our clients accountable for honesty, seeking and being employed, socializing in a healthy way, and maintaining high self-esteem. Basically, our goal is to help all of our clients to live a happy, sober life.
What is Sober Living?
For those who might not know, sober living is a community that is safe and free from drugs and alcohol. This is a sanctuary for people who are making the recovery process from drugs and alcohol. For those who are looking for a stepping stone after leaving an inpatient environment, or for those who simply need help getting back on their feet, sober living can be incredibly beneficial.
Usually, sober living homes have a set of rules and requirements that people need to follow in order to be there. Our sober living is a three-phase model. This means our clients experience various levels of responsibilities and privileges. Phase one focuses on implementing a routine for our clients. This routine includes (but is not limited to) attending multiple AA/NA/Refuge meetings weekly, securing a sponsor or mentor and actively communicating with them, attending the weekly house meeting, and doing their assigned chores.
Phase two includes the above mentioned but adds the responsibility of being an accountability partner for a new client if needed. Holding yourself and others accountable for their actions is a crucial part of maintaining sobriety. If we lived in a world where there were no consequences for actions, it’d be complete chaos.
Phase three involves a level of trust in the client and freedom. Their curfew is later than phase one and two, and they’re allowed an overnight pass if allowed by house staff. This means the client can sleep somewhere else for the night. These three phases ensure the safety of our clients and help them acclimate to “the real world” while emphasizing sobriety.
Benefits of Sober Living
Aside from providing a roof over your head, there are numerous benefits of sober living.
1: Sober living is structured: Routine and structure are two ways to maintain your sobriety. These things help you feel in control of your life. If you’ve completed inpatient and/or outpatient treatment, you probably became accustomed to the routine. One of the fastest ways to a relapse is leaving treatment with no routine whatsoever.
2: Sober living holds you accountable: We cannot stress house how important it is to be held accountable for your actions. After we help our clients establish their routine, we hold them accountable for completing it every day. Feeling responsible for getting something done gives our clients a sense of purpose. Most people in recovery are also working on boosting their self-esteem. Being accountable, feeling like you have purpose, and high self-esteem will help keep you sober.
3: Sober living is also a sober community: Sober living has fellowship and camaraderie. Although our clients may have different personal goals they’d like to work on, everyone shares the common goal of maintaining sobriety.
